The showcase - La vitrine
(test version)
The
idea: to
make a showcase with several objects, each one made by a different artist.
The aim: to push POV-ray to its limits, and show its capabilities, and
to gather as many artists as possible in a same project.
Why would I participate? Povcomp is a great competition for the POV-ray community, but
many of us don't have enough time to participate. In this project, each artist
will provide one (or more) objects, which won't take too much of his/her time,
but let you participate in povcomp. Besides that, since most of us usually work
alone, it would be a great experience to work together.
Ok, I want to try it, how does this work?
1- Say you want to participate in this project,
by answering to the thread on povray forum (http://news.povray.org/povray.competition/),
this will encourage other readers to participate.
2- Download the "Base
file" which contains the pedestal for your object, bounding boxes for
min and max size of the object, and brightness settings which will be used for
the final render for texture adjustments.
3- So, the object will have a minimum size of 6x6x6, and a maximum size of 10x10x10.
You will have to provide a title for your object to put on the tablet on the
pedestal, it will have to be short enough to fit the plate, according to the
font provided, you can scale this title, but do not do it too much.
4- The render file will have the showcase, a placement macro and an #include
"yourfile.inc". So you'll have to provide a filename for your object,
and the final filename will be given to you (in case of conflict), along with
a [number]. Then, after having made your object, your submission file will be
ended by: PovcompPlace(MyObject, [number]), where PovcompPlace will be the name
of the macro, and MyObject your object which would have been declared.
There is no special restriction for your object (of course, sex, racism... related
objects won't be accepted). Povcomp is a free subject contest, how can i put
any one?
Blender, *max, wings3d, hamapatch, or any modeller is allowed (but do not use
surface subdivisions too much).
The rendering will be made in Megapov.
Default values for number_of_waves, motion blur settings, photons... may be
given later. I don't use these features too often, so I'll need help for that.
And the rendered image? With 500 objects, a
1600x1200 render won't do it! The final rendering
will be done on this base: the title of each object must be readable (at its
default scale). So try to have your object and its details visible at this maximum
distance/resolution.
And if we win? Will we scatter the computer
into several pieces?
First condition: we have to win.
If it's one of these xxx$ to spend on Zazzle, we'll share it. If it's one poster,
we should send it so someone like Kofi Annan, or the Dalai Lama, to avoid any
conflict between us. If it's the big computer (if we ever win it), we may sell
it and share the money (what a heartbreaking idea!).
Do you need help?
Yes. I'm running on a 5-years old computer, and i have a 56k rtc modem, so i'll
have problems to download the objects if there are too many participants, and
the rendering may be a little bit long (I don't know how I will render my own
entry!). So I need someone who can provide all that. Of course, I need your
advices and ideas.
And the final source, what will you do with
it? I think it will be shared in an archive
file, and it would be easier if you allow it to be put online. Of course, if
you do not want to include your file in the final package, it will be done.
What will I do? I can't find any idea! a bicycle, a melted clock ala Dali, some cubist or surrealist
object, a mushroom cloud, a character, a monument, an abstract object, a cyber-thing,
a flying thing (an anti-g device), a music box...

Le but: pouvoir
Si
